Cén treo anois don SDLP?

Tá sé dearbhaithe go bhfuil an Ball Tionóil (Feabhal), Colum Eastwood, chun seasamh do cheannaireacht an SDLP.

Níl próifíl ró-ard ag Colum Eastwood taobh amuigh de Chathair Dhoire, bhí sé ina Ard-Mheara ar Chomhairle Chathair Dhoire i 2010 agus é 27 bliana d’aois.

Is trodaí é an ceannaire reatha , an Dr. Alasdair McDonnell, agus is cinnte go dtroidfidh sé chun an deiridh.

As na Glinntí dó ó dhúchas agus fiú mura dtaitníonn sé leis na meáin (tá sé rud beag, bhál, garbh mar dhuine), tá a chuid buanna aige.

Ina measc a chuid lucht leanúna tá an t-iar-iriseoir Fearghal McKinney.

Tá seisean ag seasamh don leas-cheannaireacht i gcoinne Dolores Kelly – atá ag tacú leis an Uasal Eastwood, chun casadh breise a chur leis an scéal.

Ní polaiteoirí throm-mheáchain iad ceachtar acu déanta na fírinne.

Alasdair McDonnell

Alasdair McDonnell, Ceannaire an SDLP. Tá a cheannaireacht á ceistiú ó toghadh é. Bhí sé an-suntasach gur cuireadh Mark Durkan amach chun labhairt ar son an SDLP le linn an toghcháin ghinéarlta.

Táthar ag rá gur capall stalcaireachta é Eastwood ach tá dhá laigeacht leis an argóint sin.

Sa chéad dul síos, níl aon riachtanas leis mar gheall ar an chóras a úsáideann an SDLP le ceannaire a thoghadh (aonvóta inaistrithe).

Sa dara dul síos, agus i bhfad níos suntasaí arís, cén fathach atá fágtha?

Bhain Mark Durkan agus Margaret Ritchie triall as ceannaireacht an pháirtí cheana.

Is é an Gaeilgeoir Patsy McGlone an t-aon duine mór le rá fágtha sa pháirtí nach raibh an cheannaireacht aige go dtí seo agus tá mé in amhras dá dtiocfadh leis an páirtí ar fad a thabhairt leis.

Labhair seisean cheana ar an fhéidearthacht go dtiocfadh an SDLP agus Fianna Fáil le chéile, ní bheadh gach duine sa pháirtí ar aon fhocal leis.

Am ciotach don SDLP an cheist seo a bheith á plé acu le linn chainteanna ar thodhchaí na n-institiúidí polaitiúla agus, is dócha, i mbéal toghcháin.

Tá sé ráite ag Colum Eastwood go mbeadh sé ar intinn aige branda nua náisiúnachas forásach a chur chun cinn agus tá béim leagtha aige ar Éire Aontaithe.

Mar sin féin, deir sé go gcaithfidh Tuaisceart Éireann feidhmiú mar is ceart chun gur féidir le hÉire Aontaithe.

Tá cáineadh déanta ag tráchtairí aontachtacha air de bhrí, dar leo, go bhfuil sé ag leanúint Sinn Féin leis an náisiúnachas.

Ach tá tráchtairí i gcoitinne ar aon fhocal ná go bhfuil bun-fhadhbanna ag an SDLP maidir le fís agus teachtaireacht an pháirtí nach mbeidh éasca a réiteach.

Ráiteas Colum Eastwood

SDLP Foyle MLA Colum Eastwood has announced his candidacy for leader of the party.

He said: “I am greatly honoured to receive nominations for party leader from SDLP branches across the North. Having listened very carefully to what our members and supporters are saying, I am proud to announce today that I will be a candidate for party leader.

I believe now is the time for a new generation to take forward, not only the party, but the future direction of the country. I intend to pursue a new brand of progressive nationalism – one that is not defined by birth but based on radical and realistic proposals and policies for a better future. We need to make Northern Ireland work for everyone, by rising to the challenge of reconciliation, driving economic growth and striving for a truly fair and shared society. Under my leadership the SDLP will promote a progressive nationalism which has economic credibility, social justice, fairness and inclusion at its core.

Those of us who want to achieve a united Ireland in the future must give our all to make Northern Ireland work today. As a proud nationalist, I believe deeply in a united Ireland. I want progressive nationalism to go much further on unity than the mere sloganising that until now has been trying to pass itself off as strategy. I want the SDLP to set out exactly what a new united Ireland will look like, and to set about convincing all the people of Ireland of the value of our convictions.

People want new leaders with new ideas, charting a new direction for our economy and our society. That is what I want the SDLP to offer. We cannot continue with crisis talks and stand-offs. Our community deserve greater maturity from our politics and bigger ambition from government.

I am seeking the leadership because I believe in the values and vision of the SDLP. Only when we change ourselves will the SDLP be able to change politics in the North or help shape the new nation.

We have to be honest about where the party stands and clear about where we want to go. That is the conversation we need to have with each other in the weeks to come. I am hungry for change and ready to lead.”
